Well.... we concluded our Christmas Concert Calendar on 18th December at Tesco Hednesford, greeting customers with festive spirit. It made a fantastic end to our Christmas programme. We now close for a well earned rest and return on Tuesday 10th January to begin work on a new collection of music. The Band would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Don't miss our Christmas Concert on Saturday 10th December in the theatre of at Great Wyrley High School. Doors open at 7pm, Concert starts at 7.30pm. Tickets available at £5.00.
To reserve please email: email@example.com or simply pay on the door.
The band would like to express their thanks and extend good wishes to the latest wave of students who will sadly be leaving us to go onto university. They will be greatly missed but will always be welcome at Great Wyrley Community Band.
We are so fortunate to have such talented musicians in the Band and our younger members are proving to be a cut above! Without exception, on 13th July, our very own 18 year old Alto Sax player - Alicia Hillman reached the finals to become Staffordshire County's Musician of the Year. She was up against 6 other talented musicians, performing infront of a full audience at the Riverway Centre in Stafford. Alicia's winning performance consisted of a lively Tango piece by Piazolla and a Romance by Binge, both on Alto Saxophone.
A big well done from everyone at GWCB!
Every year we hold an awards presentation where band members are selected for their achievements - 'Most Improved Player', 'Band Person of the Year', Woodwind and Brass awards etc. But there is one particular award that everyone tries to avoid, it's the 'Golden Plonker Award' - presented for outstanding stupidity. So far this year, nobody has slipped up, until yesterday!
So, we start the ball rolling with our first contender! On 12th June 2016 a member of the Trumpet section 'Ralph Allard-Blackshaw' turned up to play at the Walsall Arboretum without his trumpet!!?? Luckily his parents were on hand to go and get it for him. Ralph made an appearance in the second half of the concert with his trumpet.
(Better late than never!)
The Walsall Arboretum started our Bandstand season off on 12th June. The weather wasn't kind to us, having rained all morning, right up until 10 minutes before we were due to start playing. Finally, the sun came out for a short period holding off the rain for 2 hours before the heavens opened again just as we had finished our final set. Thank you to all those who braved the weather to come out and support us. We hope to see you again soon!
Last night we held our annual Awards meal. A great night was had by all, special thanks to Lynn Kearsey for organizing the night and to Vaughan and Pat for the games.
